Can you ask your readers to use their handbrakes at traffic lights?

Sadly the majority of motorists seem to forget the Highway Code. 90 per cent of them use the footbrake to remain stationary at traffic lights, not the handbrake, even though they will have a wait of several minutes. The high intensity brake lights at night and in rain cause problems. The police are among the worst offenders. May I plead with you to use your column to ask your readers to use the handbrake at traffic lights? It would seem that most of them have their clutch also depressed. The cost in wear and tear to their vehicles keeps the garage trade in business.

I have been reminding readers of automatics about this for 16 years. But they forget.
