Bascular problem

Having driven over Tower Bridge for many years, at all times of day and night and first being made aware of the 20 mph restriction (after first reading about it in your column I think?), I managed to forget the restriction myself and received a notification that my car was registered at an average of 27 mph (Ironically after going out of my way to help a friend get to London Bridge Station at 11.30 pm.)

Most of the time there is enough traffic on the bridge to prevent you driving faster than 15-20mph but I found myself with an empty road and because I came in from the London Bridge side missed the signs. The photos that came back admitted that they cannot show the driver of the car but only the number plate. Anyway, I could not see the point in arguing and admitted responsibility immediately. Instead of a £60 fine and 3 points I have been offered a short speed awareness course for £92.50.

The City of London Police say this is NOT a money making scheme and the speed limit is nothing to do with safety. I have decided to attend even though I will lose earnings but wonder what the point of the course is when the rules are so clear. 3 points seemed a draconian punishment for such an offence.

The reason for the Tower Bridge limit is to minimise damage to the structure of the bridge. The point of doing the speed awareness course is to avoid points on your licence and the consequential insurance hike.
