Can I dispute a parking notice issued because we overstayed whilst shopping at a retail park?

I received a fixed fine parking notice (£40) for exceeding the free stay time in a retail car park in Gosport Hampshire. There was no facility to extend the time by purchasing a parking ticket and admittedly we did exceed the time. However this happened because we were shopping in the retail outlets and did not realise we had exceeded the time limit until we returned to the car. As we have receipts for all the shopping we did, where do we stand legally on this? The ticket was issued by a firm called Town & City Parking Limited, who appear to have a head office in Perth Scotland.

Refuse to pay and tell them to take you to court. Your defence will be the very reasonable one that you were shopping in the outlets the entire time so it is ridiculous to penalise you for this.
