Should I replace my Mercedes-Benz C220 with a Honda CR-V for better performance in snow?

I currently run a 2001 Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI Elegance saloon. The car has done just over 80,000 miles and is in excellent condition. During the past two winters, due to the snow, I have not been able to get out of my drive and when I eventually did, my road is ungritted and the Mercedes-Benz went nowhere. I am considering replacing the car with something newer with 4-wheel-drive capability and I would welcome your advice. A trade-in allowance of £3,000 has been mentioned by a local Honda garage for a CR-V although I would not buy new. I am not a petrol head so I don't really know what else is available to meet my requirements. I believe that a petrol driven engine would be more appropriate as I do not drive more than 8,000 miles a year. I have in mind to spend up to £20,000 overall and would grateful of any advice you can give me.

Yes, a current shape CR-V makes sense, preferably on 17-inch wheels, but 18-inch wheels are still okay. It will be even more capable in the snow on a set of winter tyres, and this time of year is the best time to buy them. I fit my Michelin Alpins to a separate set of rims and swap them over at the end of October.
