Is there an alternative to my automatic to my Toyota Yaris which is less jerky when pulling away?

My Yaris TR with the new-type combined automatic is now three years old and paid for. I find this type of automatic very jerky in first gear and very poor at pulling away at junctions and traffic lights - in fact, on several occasions, it has nearly died on me. Can you tell me there are any new cars on the market that still have the standard automatic gears?

I like the driving position of the Yaris and would like to have a 5-door car with a boot that is not any smaller and, if at all possible, a cruise control type facility. I have always been very happy with the Toyotas I have had, with their good reliability and good network of efficient dealers, until I moved recently into Surrey and now have a poor dealer, so now I am prepared to go for another manufacturer and car, provided it is likely to be reliable. Does any still make a proper automatic?

Yes. The brand new Toyota Verso S. Test and video here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/toyota/toyota-vers...s. But if that is too dear for you, consider a Honda Jazz CVT-7 from £14,500: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/honda/jazz-hybrid. Or, most fun of them all, a Mazda 2 1.5 Activematic from £12,060: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/mazda/mazda-2-auto...s
