Fuel conned assumption

I have an Audi A3 SE Sportback, with the 1.6 TDI engine and have found the comments about fuel consumption interesting. My car is 14 months old with 12,500 on the clock. Many years ago as a driver of company vehicles I always had to maintain fuel logs and have kept up this habit since. Overall average consumption has been 53mpg. At 2k it was 39mpg, at 5k it was 47mpg, at 10k it was 51mpg. I've recorded several tankfuls at 58 - 60 mpg. A typical top-up being 10-11 gallons. To put this consumption into context with my driving, I am fairly heavy with my right foot, but prefer anticipation to the use of the brakes. My journeys are about 65% local (under 30 miles) return, the remainder are longer trunk road / motorway trips. When it comes to the published fuel figures, who really believes them? Their only purpose is to serve as a comparison between vehicles.

Many thanks for that useful feedback. Unfortunately, the EC figures do not even provide a useful basis of comparison any more. They merely tell you which manufacturers are best at optimising their engines for those particular lab tests. To solve this problem by providing a real life comparison we have started the Real Life Fuel Economy Register at www.honestjohn.co.uk that enables drivers to upload their consumption every month and each time they do it alters the cumulative average for all drivers of the same car.

Good choice of engines. Some petrol engines now chain cam. Comfortable and well built interior. cheap to run 1.6 TDI. Feels very refined especially on the motorway.
