Would you recommend that I fit snow socks to my Ford S-Max?

Coming into the winter I am considering getting snow tyres, but I'm put off by the cost (£1000 for rims and tyres). I drive a 2007 S-Max, which was fantastic last year, but we still have some sticky moments. The other option of getting snow chains is appealing but impractical at short notice, and the space on the inside of the tyres appears to be an issue. What is your opinion on snow socks which fit over the tyre to increase grip and how does it compare to the alternatives?

Autosocks work on soft snow by picking up loose snow and using it to, provide traction against the snow on the ground. But they have to be removed as soon as you reach solid surfaces or they get ripped to shreds.
