Small, fun car for Country roads

I need to get rid of my beloved 51 diesel Fabia estate and swap it for a second hand hatchback.

I'd like an economical diesel (manual) which is safe, but with good handling for Cornish roads.

It will be doing both short commutes (about 30 miles a day) and long distance (200 mile +) trips. There needs to be decent boot space to fit a dog for short journeys, and reliability is probably the most important thing. This car almost certainly does not exist, but do you have any suggestions?

Maybe a Mazda 2 1.6D, but actually a Mazda 2 1.3TS2 is more fun "to rag around" and not significantly less economical in £££s per mile.
