Downsizing from a V70

I am reluctantly considering part exchanging my Volvo V70 D5 (55 reg) for a smaller car to reduce running costs. The car will mainly be used to commute from a rural area into a city centre, a distance of circa 25 miles.

I also need to be able to transport up to 3 small children for the nursery/school drop off on my way to work so 5 doors is preferable.

I am looking at cars circa 3 years old around the £4-6K price; my aim is to minimise the cost to change. I am not bothered about 'additional features' I just want a cheap to run, reliable vehicle. Which small cars should I consider?
