Noisy air con pump on a BMW 3 Series

I have a noisy air conditioning pump on my BMW 3 Series. An independent garage advises that a new pump is necessary, but not urgent. If I leave it the noise will simply increase.

Quoted £753.49 for new pump plus one hour fitting at £60.00 and a regas at £65.00. Total with VAT £1060.00

Is this reasonable? Can pump be "serviced" rather than replaced and is a reconditioned pump a possibility?

Is this a known fault for a four-year-old BMW?

Would they contribute to repair or must I go to a Main Dealer? Should I hike round for a second opinion?

May be nothing more than the electromagnetic clutch to the pump that can be rerplaced separately for about £100. But, of course, you will be told it can't be so that a much greater profit can be made from you for the job.
