Noisey Volkswagen Sharan at idle

Our VW Sharan TDi 1.9. Makes a loud vibrating sound (very audible inside car). Just listening around it appears to be coming from the back of engine / steering rack area. Also it only vibrates when idling. A bit of gas and sound goes away. Most noticeable when turning steering wheel (while idling and car is stationary). I'm guessing something todo with steering but not sure why it's only noisey when idling.
