What car will suit one tall driver and one short driver?

We currently own a Kia Sportage. I am quite tall and love it. My wife is quite small and enjoys it as a passenger but finds it too big as a driver. We only cover about 6k miles a year so it has to be petrol powered. Any suggestions at about £7k ?

Since you are dropping down from a Kia Sportage (which is roughly 4.5 metres long) and doing low mileage you want to target small SUVs. These give you the high seating position and headroom you like, but have a much smaller footprint (shorter than a standard Ford Focus), making them incredibly easy to park and manoeuvre. On a £7000 budget we'd focus on reliable petrol engines.

We'd suggest a Suzuki Vitara (2015 - 2017). It has a surprisingly tall, boxy roofline that gives taller drivers plenty of headroom without feeling cramped. There's excellent all-around visibility and it has a very light, easy steering setup. Look for the 1.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. It is reliable abd perfect for your mileage.

You also might want to consider a Skoda Yeti (2014 - 2016 Facelift). It is widely considered one of the best tall person/small car designs. It has more vertical headroom than almost any standard SUV on the market and you can raise the driver's seat up high and still have inches of space above your head. The rear of the car is a completely flat, vertical drop which makes parking incredibly easy because where the rear glass ends is exactly where the car ends. At £7000, look for the 1.2 TSI petrol engine in a post-2014 facelift model.

Alternatively look at a Honda HR-V (2015 - 2017). If you want something that feels a bit more modern inside and offers strong reliability, the second-generation Honda HR-V is brilliant. Honda uses a clever layout where the fuel tank is under the front seats, creating an unusually deep floor and loads of legroom and headroom for the driver. Honda's famous Magic Seats fold completely flat or flip up like cinema seats. It gives the storage versatility of a massive car in a vehicle that is very easy to drive and park. Seek out the 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine. Like the Suzuki, it is non-turbocharged, meaning there are fewer expensive components to go wrong on low-mileages.
