What should I do to protect my car when it's not being used for 3 months?
Following major kidney cancer surgery I have been advised not to drive my 2011 Mazda MX-5 2.0L RC for a couple of months although I am allowed to drive my other cars - a Yeti and a Picanto. The MX-5 was last used in December so will be out of action for 3 and a half months. The VED was due on 1 February but I decided to SORN it as the VED is quite costly. However, I have continued to insure it as the premium was only £110 after cashback. I propose to move the car slightly to avoid flat spots on the tyres and park it in gear with the handbrake off. What else should I do?

We would suggest increasing the tyre pressures to around 40PSI (to reduce flat spot risk) and if the car is inside a garage, which is of course much more preferable, we would connect a smart charger for the battery. The handbrake off and left in gear is ideal and adding a fuel stabiliser to prevent the fuel degrading is another suggestion. Also, ensure the anti-freeze is correct.
If it is parked inside a garage, leave a window open by about 1 inch ( for damp prevention) and block the exhaust pipe with a clean rag or wire wool to prevent rodents. Just remember to remove it when you come to start the car again. A reminder post-it-note on the instrument dials is a good idea.
