Should I choose a diesel or a petrol car?

I am very interested in purchasing a used Dacia Duster 1.5-litre diesel dCi Laureate (110) Euro 6 vehicle with a 4x2 (2WD) drivetrain. As the engine is diesel-powered l am expecting it to have better fuel consumption/mileage than the 1.5-litre petrol-powered model: maybe an extra 5mpg? Given that diesel in the UK is 8-10p more expensive pet litre and l am doing +/-18000 miles a year, is owning the diesel version more beneficial than the petrol version? (both engines put out approximately the same horsepower: 105hp for the petrol and 106hp for the diesel.

On that kind of mileage, the diesel does probably make more sense. UK-bound Dusters weren't ever available with a 1.5-litre petrol as far as we're aware, so we're assuming it's the 1.6 petrol you're thinking of. In that case, the difference in economy according to the official figures is actually more like 20mpg. If it matters to you, the diesel versions also have a higher towing capacity.
