Are these kits that increases EV battery capacity legal?
I have seen adverts for kits from China that increase battery capacity of BEVs. Are these modifications legal and do they have to be declared to insurance? I have also seen videos where Tesla batteries were upgraded. Would these modifications increase premiums?

Thank you for your message. It’s important to note that any modification to your vehicle is considered a material modification in insurance terms, so your insurer would need to be told of any changes made.
The legality of the modifications depends on the compliance with UK and EU vehicle regulations, which you can discuss with your insurer, vehicle manufacturer, or research thoroughly online. Fitting unapproved components could result in your vehicle being classed as unsafe.
All modifications must be shared with your insurer to make sure that your vehicle is safe to be on the roads. The modifications that would generally increase premiums depend on whether the power output is increased, the safety systems of your vehicle and any change in value to the vehicle. However, these can be confirmed by your insurer.
