Are alloy wheel rim protectors any good?

My MINI JCW puts a smile on my face every time I get in it - the only downside are its wheels. The alloy's are dished, like the bottom of a dinner plate and ride on super skinny 205/45 R18 tyres. If I come whisper close to a kerb, or hit one of the many potholes, it's an expensive trip to the wheel doctor. Would you recommend alloy rim protectors to help save rim damage or is there perhaps some alternative you could suggest?

Alloy wheel protectors can take some of the sting out of minor kerb impacts and are cheaper than wheel refurbishment, but won't prevent more significant damage. The only alternative is to change your tyres for something wider, or even change your alloy wheels, although both of these options will potentially change the handling characteristics too.
