Why does one need to 'register' a replacement battery with the on board car's computer?

Battery registration allows the car to adjust to the new battery settings and ensures that the car's systems properly recogniese the new battery. It's necessary for vehicles that use Intelligent Battery Sensors (IBS) to monitor the battery's voltage, current, temperature and charge. Failing to register the new battery can in certain circumstances result in the battery not being fully charged or under charged resulting in a shorter life span.
