Secondhand small family car

Our daughter is looking to replace her 03 Renault Megane Scenic 1.4 16v (in good condition, with full service history) for a second-hand (preferably 06 upwards), smaller, more efficient 5dr Hatchback petrol or diesel in a low car tax bracket.

She quite likes the Honda Jazz, Mazda2 and Ford Fiesta, as there is only her and two young children aged 7 and 10.

Mainly town driving, and home to work Mon to Fri. (Guess who lends their car for all those longer journeys!?)

Approximately, what price can she expect for a trade-in? She has got £4.2k + the trade-in price to spend, so what three types/models of cars would you recommend for her?

The Scenic is only worth about £1,000, maybe £1,200. That makes £5,400 max, which isn't really enough for a decent Jazz or a Mazda 2 1.3TS2, and won't get her one in the £30 tax bracket. Does buy a square shape Fiesta 1.25, a couple of years old, though.
