key fob won't open door

My car has not been used for a couple of weeks and when I came to get in at the weekend the key fob would not work to open the door. I then tried the key which did open the door but then the car wouldn't start or do anything actually!

The light on the key fob is working so I would say the battery is ok and we have also checked the battery on the car itself and it is showing fully charged.

Phoned Toyota for some advise and was told to bring it into garage (have to get it towed in) and they will take a look prices start from £50. They said it most likly to be that the car is not regognising the keys any more.
