Winter tyres or a four wheel drive?

We live at the bottom of a steep hill on a private road which is not cleared of snow. All of our neighbours have four wheel drive and so drive on and compact any snow, which then freezes.

Will winter tyres cope with these conditions, or will we have to have 4 wheel drive too, to get out?

Our MG ZTT 2.5 cannot cope and we were told winter wheels are not available for it so it will mean a new car. Any suggestions? We need a reasonable amount of floor space with rear seats down. Budget about £25,000, possible £30,000, for new/1 year old.

On compacted snow winter tyres will not be able to pick p snpw and use it for snow against snow traction so you probaly do need four wheel drive with a lockable centre diff as well as winter tyres.
