new Mazda 3 diagnosed with piston slap

My brand new Mazda3 petrol has only done 5000 miles but has been clattering when cold since 800 miles.

A Mazda technician finally diagnosed piston slap and said he would make a report recommending a 'short engine'.

What exactly is this? Am I likely to get a new engine from the factory? Or should I insist on a new car?

It means you will get a new engine because yours has worn prematurely in the bores for some reason.
Yes, a new 'short engine' is a new engine from the block down.
