Transferring a number plate

We intend buying a new car in the Autumn (Toyota Auris Hybrid T Spirit).

Our son-in-law would like to buy our present car; a Citroen C5 Exclusive 2.2 diesel automatic with leather interior. We bought the car new in March 2004 and it has done 81000 miles and has a full Citroen service history. It has just been serviced. The MOT lasts until March 2012 and the RFL until the end of February 2012.

How much should we ask for the Citroen, bearing in mind the trade price which is what we would be likely to get if we traded it in?

How much discount could we expect to get on the Auris (if any)?

We have a personal number plate on the C5. I believe that we would need to put it on retention so that it could go on the new car. How do we do that?

To transfer your plate to a retention certificate go to www.dvla.gov.uk and follow the instructions regarding cherished registration transfers. Costs £140 last time I looked. That C5 is currently worth £1,650. I don't do future values. Can't tell you what discount you will get on an Auris HSD or how affected part supply will be by the earthquake in Japan. Good choice, though.

Decent combination of ride and handling that might suit some people better than a harder sprung Golf or a Civic. A few inches taller than a Golf of Focus so easier to get in and out.
