Diesel or Petrol

I would like to buy a premium small family car and had decided on a 118D until I read the letter "Recharge of the light brigade " in the Telegraph.

My usage would typically be short school runs, occasional days out and holidays. My annual mileage is less then 10K.

I chose the 118d for being good to drive, economical with good green credentials and hopefully reliable in the long term.

I also considered the Audi A3 Sportback, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Toyota Prius.
What would you advise?

Not a diesel with a particulate filter. Better a small petrol turbo such as a VAG 1.4TSI 122.
