I'm being charged for a parking fine sent to an old address - can I appeal?

Six years ago whilst living with my fiance I received (unbeknown to me) a parking ticket at the residence we shared. Now after six years I received a solicitor's letter stating I owe £2,000 for an unpaid fine I was not aware of. I phoned the solicitor who informed me I could pay half of the mentioned charge. They said prior communication had been sent to me to my parents' address, the registered address for myself as the keeper, but in six years this is the first I knew of a fine. Do I have any appeal against this charge? I can ill afford this amount of focus on my credit reference as I'm trying to purchase a house.
