Rovering eye

We are considering buying a Rover 75 Connoisseur 2.0 TD 05 plate to see us through the next 7-10 years. Is this a sensible project? Are spares a potential problem; will the engine be BMW sourced; are there better alternatives at a comparable price and what might that price be for an average mileage? Leather upholstery is a must and probably estate car body.

Two e-mails ago another reader informed me of having achieved 250,000 reliable miles from a Rover 75 2.0CDI on ordinary (cheapest) diesel and with 15,000 mile oil changes. Obviously he has clocked up the mileage fairly quickly, which is another factor. For reliability, go for the low power 115CDI rather than the 131CDTI. Yes, BMW engine, but in BMWs the more powerful versions go through turbos. Can't tell you what the parts situation will be in years to come. Far better to go for the pre-facelift as there are more of them out there, and that's the one likely to eventually become a classic. It's unusual in looking good from every angle. One actually starred in a French film about a kidnapping called 'Red Light'. Pay from £2,500 for a 2001Y reg Classic Tourer to £5,00 for an 04 Connoisseur Tourer.
