I am 22 and thinking of trading in my current car, a 2006 VW Polo, for something newer as, while it has been a fairly good car, its ownership hasn’t been entirely trouble free. I have to make a careful decision as I will only be able to put £3,000 into the purchase (the rest will be financed). Whatever car I choose I will keep for 3-4 years and then trade in again, so depreciation is also important. I am in a real quandary and hope you may be able to help. Whilst I know the new Polo is not out until the end of the year, I’m unsure as to if it is worth hanging on for it or to go for a demonstator MINI One? My only requirements are a car that is safe, solid and reliable, and, as previously mentioned, one that will not depreciate too heavily. Space isn’t too important. It will only need to carry the occasional animal feedbag, which seats can be folded down for. I do not know whether the MINI is worth paying the price tag. If you would be able to offer your advice I would be incredibly grateful, or perhaps you may know of another car that may be worth my money more.

Wait until June and you can get a new Nissan Pixo for £5,995. Or see if a Hyundai dealer can get you a new Hyundai i10 1.2 Classic, Comfort or Style, from £6,800 on £35 tax and with a 5-year warranty. Why buy cars that sell on snob appeal when other makes and models are now cheaper and better and, in terms of actual cash lost, depreciate less?
