Moby trick?

I qualify for Mobility and would like your advice. Up until now I have always claimed the allowance and purchased a used vehicle approx 3 years old, such as a basic Ford Focus, and paid my own insurance and tyres repairs (excise licence provided) and drive around 2,000 miles a year. However, at the end of 3 years my then 6-year-old cars have cost me a considerable amount in running costs and are only worth around £1,000 to £1,200. The current 3 years allowance is £7,659.60 and Mobility is offering a superb selection of petrol, diesel, automatic and manual. An example is a VW Polo Switch 5 door 1.4 diesel with a very Eco engine and metallic paint. I understand that the current Polo model is soon to be replaced, which would not bother me. The cost includes fully comprehensive Insurance cover for up to two extra drivers and the only expense that I would have to pay is fuel. There is a 36,000 mile cap on mileage and provided you hand the car back in a respected condition you finish the lease and choose another. My dilemma is the low mileage and I enjoy a full no claims insurance. Should I move to the Mobility scheme or continue to purchase a similar vehicle as before? If this is your suggestion can you recommend a 3-year 4/5-door vehicle as I will need to put some money towards the change of vehicle.

It's a matter of sums. There's that £7,659.60 against what another car is likely to cost you over 3 years, taking account of depreciation, insurance and repairs. You could wind up a few thousand ahead by buying and running your own car. And you also have the choice of amortising that car over many more years. But that carries risk, much of it unpredictable. So if you want no worries motoring, go with Motability. If you want to take the gamble of coming out ahead and having a bit more cash, get a car of your own. Something like a Hyundai i10 1.2 Classic, currently at £6,800, capable of 50+ mpg (but not when used for short runs), with a/c and with a 5-year warranty. By the way, you cannot use a Polo Bluemotion diesel or any diesel for a life of nothing more than short runs from cold. That will wreck it.
Dear Honest John,
