Fighting over scraps

I heard from a Dutch mate that in Germany the government is giving those blessed with old motors a tidy €2500 for a newer set of wheels. Nice. Some folk I have talked with here (in England) are saying our government is also thinking of doing this. Have you heard anything about this, or is it pie in the sky? I have a 1995 Peugeot diesel, (just touched 165,000 and going well in the engine department, if not the plastic/upholstery/bodywork depts), and am looking for a Focus diesel. If it’s true that this idea is being given serious consideration, I will hold off from spending my greens for the time being.

It's €2,500 (Euros) to scrap cars more than 9 years old. They then get a voucher that they can use to part-pay for a replacement car less than a year old. This was being discussed again at The Treasury during the last week of February and has been urged by Tony Woodley of the Unite union, but Mandleson seems to be resisting it, probably because he hasn't got any money. Obviously a £2,000 scrappage voucher would make a sensible deposit for a PCP and might get dealer finance and cars moving again. But the longer this is talked about rather than acted upon, the longer potential buyers like you will hold back.
