Extra Sensory

My wife has a 2006 Nissan Micra 1.6 Sport, so it's just 6 months or so out of its 3-year warranty. The other day when she started it up the brake warning and the ABS warning lights and the ESP off warning light came on. After driving it home carefully she took it in to the local main dealer (Barnard & Brough) who inspected it and told her that the ABS system was corroded and needed to be replaced completely at a cost of about £1,500 for the parts and £600 labour. This came as a bit of a shock. Very helpfully, the dealer rang Nissan and they agreed to supply the part for free but we would still have to pay the labour charge. My wife rang Nissan and they eventually agreed to pay £200 towards the labour cost and also persuaded the dealer to reduce his labour charge by 10% - so this leaves us still having to pay about £400 in labour cost. The dealer also admitted that they have had to replace 5 of these ABS systems already due to corrosion. It seems to me that Nissan is admitting that there is a problem with the ABS system as they are supplying the part. Should they not be paying more of the labour charges too? What are your thoughts on this?

That's excellent service from Nissan and the dealer for a 4-year old car. There is a widespread problem with Teves Mk 60 ABS/ESP modules on VAG cars, BMWs (now including MINIs), Volvos, Mazdas and Fords. It's the first time I've heard of the problem on a Micra. Begs the question why the EC has legislated for the compulsory fitting of a ‘safety’ component that is proving to be so unreliable.
