Walking car

A friend has decided to ditch his 2003 X-Trail diesel after its fuel pump failed. I am advising him on his next purchase. He travels 25,000 miles each year as he is an avid hill walker. 4x4 preferable due to harsh Scottish winters and increased visibility. Within his £10-12k budget I have suggested the petrol variants of the RAV-4, CR-V and Qashqai. I have suggested petrol because diesels require a good thrashing now and again which he doesn't/won't do, and also because is utterly useless at car maintenance and would fail to check oil levels regularly. I would be afraid of him wasting an engine, especially as his cars would quickly rack-up a mileage where he needs to be checking his oil regularly and he wouldn't think to do this. Would you suggest anything else?

For economy, he does need a diesel. At 25k miles a year the benefits outweigh the burdens. But if he is the sort of idiot you describe him as he will probably fill it with petrol and wreck it. So he needs to fit a misfuelling prevention device that prevents petrol filler nozzles being inserted into diesel cars. At £30, inclusive are www.sol-ace.co.uk, www.caparorightfuel.com and www.fuelsure.com. www.dieselkeydirect.com (which has Thatcham approval) costs £58.75. Ford Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo, S-Max and Galaxy now all come with Ford’s own ‘Easyfuel’ misfuel prevention device.
