Swarf and sophisticated

Your answer to a reader with a whining manual transmission on his 6 month old Honda Jazz stated, “Honda is now very wisely asking you to bring the car back to have the transmission oil drained (together with the running-in swarf) after 6,000 miles before the particles have been ground up small enough to get into the bearings. Makes sense to me and should prevent trouble later on.” I have asked my Honda garage at Maidenhead Berks about this and they have never heard of this instruction by Honda. I have a 'new model' Jazz purchased in December 2008 and naturally I am concerned that this oil change has never been carried out on my car.

The dealer recommended this oil change because the reader's transmission was noisy, probably from bits of swarf. While it's always a good idea to change the transmission oil after the first year (at your own expense), it is not a service requirement. Some new Jazz with high mileages have already required replacement gearbox bearings.
