The old ’un rule

I am 16 years-old and I am currently trying to help my mum buy a new car. Sadly, our trusty Vauxhall Vectra 2.0 GLS requires major engine repairs or possibly even a new engine. We were looking at used Audi A6 estates and quite liked the look of some of the 2-3 litre models. They were about 10 years old and had between 90 and 135 thousand miles on the clock with full service histories. They were priced between£2,000 and £3,000. Would they be good buys, and are there any things you need to watch out for? Alternatively, any suggestions you might have would be (very) greatly appreciated. We have up to £3,000 to spend, would like a reliable estate up to 11-years-old. Auto and air-con are musts and so is the thought that it would last for at least three years without any major repairs. Leather would be preferable but not essential.

Golden rule: A 10-year-old car that originally cost £30,000 will have £30,000 car problems. A 5-year-old car that originally cost £15,000 will have £15,000 car problems and far fewer of them. Problem areas here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/audi/a6-plus-rs6-199.../
Far better to spend the money on a much newer Mondeo estate.
