Van mail

I wondered if you could nudge me in the right direction for choosing a good 2-3 year old van that could not only be used for transporting my rubbish around, but also be comfortable enough to act as a 'car' to take two people and a small dog around the country. I'm looking for a reliable and economical medium sized van similar to a Merc Vito or VW Transporter but I'm totally clueless and have no faith in my own judgement as I have always considered the Bond Bug and the Austin Princess to be really cool looking, and I once had a long standing love affair with a Maestro. Also, is it better to buy from a main dealer or are there van 'supermarkets' out there? (My wife just called out from the kitchen to say thank you for recommending her Panda, which she says, has always delighted her.)

Probably the best current light van is a Citroen Berlingo. It's the most comfortable and handles best. Next up the Citroen Despatch/Peugeot Expert, which also handle surprisingly well. And, in between them, the new Nissan NV200. But if you are not a VAT registered business you will probably find it is cheaper to buy a Multispace or kombi version with windows and folding seats in the back than a van. And the 'car' version will also be cheaper to insurer.
