Irrever rant

I recently took my Nissan Micra 1.3 into the local dealer for service. Whilst there I enquired of a salesman about the rev counter on the dashboard, my question was "do I need to drive at a certain rev limit in each of the 5 gears"? His answer was that I should ignore the rev counter and there is no reason for Nissan to install one. This cannot be true. My question remains unanswered, please can you help?

The man is a patronising moron and was treating you like one. A rev counter is a useful indicator to tell you when to change up or down. For economy, best to change up at between 2,000 and 3,000rpm and try not to exceed 4,500rpm. Best also to change down when revs drop below 1,500rpm in any gear.
