A winter’s tyre

In a recent response I think you said that a new run-flat tyre would be
available from October which offered a softer ride than previous run-flats. I need to change all four tyres on my Skoda Octavia Scout TDI. It's currently shod with Dunlop SP Sport 225/50R17. Who makes
the new run-flats and how would the ride compare? I've covered 30k miles in the Scout since buying new in April 2008. I needed an estate car big enough for two people, two dogs and associated luggage for frequent trips to my holiday lodge in Northumberland. The 4x4 is to cope with the probability of snow in the Scottish Borders and the fairly high annual mileage requires fuel economy. This car ticks all the boxes. It coped fine with the snow last February and returns 50+ mpg on the long journey up North. Particularly useful is the optional extra flat load compartment floor which enables me to put the usual boot stuff under the cover out of site and leaves the back clear for my two Lurchers.

The manufacturer is Bridgestone. The tyres are RFT3s. And they should be coming through about now. The ride is the same as conventional tyres of the same size. However, for the type of use you describe, winter compound tyres would be of greater benefit than four-wheel drive. See these figures from Auto Oggo: Stopping Distance 40km/h on snow Winter Tyres 12.8m, Summer Tyres 32.4m. Stopping Distance 70km/h on dry road at 4c Winter Tyres 17m, Summer Tyres 23m. Stopping Distance 80km/h on wet road at 8c Winter Tyres 25m, Summer Tyres 35m. Auto Oggo also noted that a FIAT 500 on winter tyres performed better that a 4x4 on summer tyres.
