Lighter evenings

What's the situation regarding daytime running lights please? We've just tried out a new VW Polo and the salesman emphasised the fact that it already had daytime running lights and that they would be mandatory next year. Presumably that only applies to new cars but is that true and which other manufacturers are already fitting them?

EC mandatory to be fitted to all new cars from 2011, I think. My FIAT 500 has them too. Happily, the EC saw sense and allows them to be separate, less blinding, lights from dipped headlights because dipped Xenons are very dangerous indeed. (www.blindedbixenon.co.uk) LED DRLs are very popular on new Renaults, Vauxhalls, BMWs, Audis and Mercedes. You see the cars coming without being blinded by them and without their lights obscuring the headlight of a motorbike.
