Pull over

I’m looking for some pointers towards a new car. I’m about to purchase a mid-sized caravan and want to trade in the wife’s 04 Golf 2.0 TDI for a 4x4. We will only be towing 3-4 times a year so the car will still need to be fairly swift for her daily routines. It seems that whatever we consider, other people keep putting us off. We started by considering a Freelander, then thought we had settled on a Kia Sportage until read reviews of the RAV-4, X-Trail and CR-V. What’s your advice?

The VW Golf Mk IV 2.0TDI SE was Caravan Club Towcar of the Year. Category winners were:
* Kia Soul Shaker 1.6 CRDi
* Land Rover Discovery 4 TDV6 HSE
* Mazda6 2.2D Estate TS2
* Škoda Superb Elegance 3.6 V6 4x4 DSG
* Volvo XC60 SE D5 AWD
But Hyundai has just fitted its Santa Fe with an amazing new 2.2 litre chain cam diesel that pumps out 194bhp and 422Nm torque, while also offering up to 41.5mpg and down to 176g/km CO2. On top of that, both manual and automatic are now 6-speed, prices start at £21,495, towing weight of the manual is 2,500kg and it comes with a 5-year warranty. A new KIA Sorento will be arriving soon with the same drivetrain. Shed tugging doesn’t get better.
