Toyota RAV4 (2013 – 2019) Review

Toyota RAV4 (2013 – 2019) At A Glance

3/5

+Practical with a good boot and plenty of rear leg room. 2.5 hybrid with 2WD or 4WD available. Five year warranty. Proving very reliable.

-Not as satisfying to drive as some rivals. Interior materials aren't as good as a Mazda CX-5.

Insurance Groups are between 22–29
On average it achieves 79% of the official MPG figure

The popularity of the crossover has ballooned in recent years, but back in the 1990s, when they were still called 4x4s, if you wanted something compact there were only a handful on sale, one of which was the original Toyota RAV4. So Toyota has quite a history with family-sized SUVs, and it shows with the latest RAV4.

This model tows the line between crossover and full-sized SUV to great effect. It’s a very commodious car and there’s enough space for a family, with plenty of legroom and headroom in the back. Thanks to low cabin floor there’s no awkward transmission tunnel either so even the middle seat is useable.

The boot is large and has some neat, practical extras like a net for storing bits and pieces, cubby holes and seats that fold completely flat in one movement. In terms of practicality it's among the best crossovers, bettering the likes of the Mazda CX-5 and Volkswagen Tiguan for overall space.

Toyota offers a choice of petrol or diesel engines but most buyers will go for the diesels. There’s a 2.2-litre with 151PS or a 2.0-litre with 123PS, the former of which is available with an optional six-speed automatic transmission and with 2WD. The only petrol on offer is a 2.0-litre Valvmatic with 152PS available only with Multidrive S CVT automatic gearbox and 4WD.

The least earth shattering engine was the entry-level 2.0-litre diesel, which emits a reasonable 127g/km of CO2 with 2WD and has official economy of 57.6mpg.

Toyota RAV4 (2013 – 2019) handling and engines

As is typical with crossover models, the RAV4 is offered with a choice of front or all-wheel drive. For most, the front-wheel drive model – powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine – should be perfectly adequate. It’s got plenty of torque and it’s frugal, with official fuel consumption of 57.6mpg and emissions of 126g/km.

While it’s a decent, flexible engine it’s a little on the gruff side, clattering and grumbling away even at idle, but generally it’s unobtrusive. The front-wheel drive version of the car is reasonable to drive – it’s not particularly exciting but it stops and turns well enough in town or on twisting roads.

The ride is reasonable. It's not so soft as to wallow around and feel unbalanced while at speed it does a great job of ironing out lumps and bumps, making it a confidence-inspiring companion on rural roads. Unfortunately it's not perfect at lower speeds in town, where rough, broken surfaces and bigger potholes upset the ride quality and create a lot of road noise.

The steering is a little on the heavy side by Toyota's usual standards. If you've ever driven other Toyota models you'll be used to feather light steering, but the RAV4's is much meatier and heavier. That's a blessing at higher speeds and a curse at lower speeds. Thankfully the gearchange is slick and precise, plus the clutch is very light.

Keener drivers, or those who live in rural areas, will be better off with an all-wheel drive model and there are two to choose from. Firstly the 2.0-litre petrol which is only offered in conjunction with a CVT automatic. For an all-wheel drive petrol auto it’s not too bad in terms of efficiency, managing 39.2mpg.

Toyota also offers all-wheel drive with a 2.2-litre diesel engine, linked to either a manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Keener drivers and those who tow caravans or trailers will appreciate the blend of surefooted handling and useful torque offered by the larger diesel model.

If running costs are top of the priority list buyers will have to stick to the front-wheel drive model though. The larger diesel engine has decent official fuel economy at 49.9mpg, but its emissions push it into VED band F – and if you choose the automatic gearbox economy is 42.2mpg and emissions are 176g/km, meaning band I VED.

The RAV4 has an impressively practical cabin. It’s clearly been designed for families, with room in the back row for three passengers. The rear seat backs fold flat in one movement, expanding load space from an already very impressive 547 litres to huge 1746 litres. There are also some neat touches, like a net for storing odds and ends, and an under floor compartment.

Up front the RAV4 is nicely laid out, with plenty of useful cubby holes including one perfectly sized for smartphones. The air conditioning controls are neat and logical, as is the layout of the instrument binnacle. There’s also a touchscreen audio system on upper trim levels, but it takes a little getting used to.

Unfortunately the material choices aren’t the very best, with no soft touch plastics on the dash covering, for example. That said everything is hardwearing and should stand the test of time and there are some plush faux leather coverings on higher trim levels, along with leather seats.

Standard equipment is reasonable, with electric windows, alloy wheels, tinted glass, Bluetooth and air conditioning across all grades. The mid spec Icon grade probably offers the best blend of equipment and value, though – it has everything most drivers will need including cruise control, a rear view camera, automatic wipers and automatic headlights.

Moving to top Invincible trim adds heated leather seats, keyless entry and start, power hatchback door and rear parking sensors, but unless you really want leather upholstery its’ probably best to stick to the Icon model and save some money.

Model History

November 2012

New Toyota RAV4 launched

The 2013 Toyota RAV4 builds on the core values of its predecessors, while introducing distinctive new styling, a premium quality interior, stronger and more rewarding dynamic performance and more fuel-efficient powertrains.

The 2013 Toyota RAV4 is longer (+205mm over SWB model without rear wheel carrier) and wider (+30mm) but lower (-25mm) than its predecessor, and presents a new silhouette that expresses its versatility, roominess and improved dynamic capabilities.

The exterior displays elements of Toyota’s new family 'look' in its frontal appearance. The new Toyota“face” includes a stronger treatment of the lower grille and a smaller upper grille extending the full width between the headlamp units. The new approach is also witnessed in the keen-edged design of the headlamps and detailing in the arrangement of the LED daytime running lights.

The tailgate itself is now top-hinged with an integrated roof spoiler. In Europe nine exterior colours will be available, including two new shades: Titan Blue and Highland Green. The new RAV4’s cabin is spacious, comfortable and provides the driver with a cockpit-like position at the wheel. It extends the practicality of its predecessors by offering more room, higher quality finishes and a more focused and engaging driving experience.

The new dashboard comprises strong upper and lower beams, interrupted by a curved, metal-finished spar to frame the instrument binnacle, steering wheel and driver’s footwell. The design introduces high quality materials, including soft padding on many of the touch-points for driver and passengers, crisp trim finishes, new colours and more leather around the instrument panel.

All the instrument and switchgear is backlit in cool blue, adding to the sophistication and consistency of the cabin environment. The driving position has been designed for excellent ergonomics, greater comfort, better forward visibility and a more engaging driving experience. The driver’s seat hip-point has been lowered by 5mm and the seat height adjustment range has been increased by 15mm. At the same time, the steering wheel angle has been lowered by 2.3 degrees.

To give the driver a better forward view, the front pillars have been moved further outwards, increasing the field of vision from the wheel by three degrees. The pillars are thinner, too, with an eight per cent narrower cross-section. RAV4 remains compact and manoeuvrable, but within its overall length of 4,570mm and 2,660mm wheel base Toyota has created significantly more room inside for passengers and load space that’s on a par with large saloons.

The front-to-rear seat couple distance is now a best-in-class 970mm. Combined with a thinner front seatback design, this increases rear legroom. The rear seats have been made more comfortable by increasing the cushion’s length and increasing its surface angle. Higher side bolsters have been added, too.

Thanks to Toyota’s Easy Flat system, the rear seats can be quickly and easily folded flat. The seats divide 60:40 and each section can be reclined independently. The loadspace is longer, increasing capacity to 547 litres, and an extra 49 litres of storage have been added to the undertray, taking it to 100 litres.

The side-hung tailgate that has featured on all previous versions of RAV4 has been replaced with a top-hinged unit. On some versions this is power operated. The tailgate opening has the lowest lip height in its class, at 645mm, and a 1,370mm-wide aperture. The engine line-up for the new RAV4 in western Europe includes a new 2.0-litre diesel. The range has been selected to give the new model an unmatched balance of front and all-wheel drive performance with class-leading CO2emissions across the board.

For European markets there is a choice of a 149bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine, a new 122bhp 2.0-litre diesel and a 148bhp 2.2-litre diesel. Each one gives improved CO2 emissions performance, on average better by 12 per cent across the range.

As well as providing a more comfortable and focused driving position, the new RAV4 builds on its SUV attributes with retuned suspension, revised electric power steering and an Integrated Dynamic Drive System that comes with a new Sport mode. Together these revisions and introductions make for greater stability and agility in the wet and dry, giving a more confidence-inspiring, intuitive and involving drive.

Down-hill Assist and Hill-start Assist Control are also available. Down-hill Assist is featured on all models equipped with automatic transmission and is particularly helpful when driving in icy conditions or snow; it automatically controls gear selection, engine speed and the ABS’s individual wheel braking to help the driver keep skid-free control of the vehicle on slippery descents.

The Integrated Dynamic Drive is a sophisticated high-speed interactive management system which co-ordinates control of RAV4’s new Dynamic Torque Control AWD system, Vehicle Stability Control and electric power steering to improve performance, handling and safety.

The Dynamic Torque Control constantly monitors and controls the transfer of drive torque between the front and rear axles using an electromagnetic coupling located ahead of the rear differential. The torque distribution can vary from 100:0 to 50:50, front to rear. Front-wheel drive (100:0) is automatically engaged in normal driving conditions to achieve the best fuel economy.

The system determines the degree of torque transfer using data from a series of sensors monitoring vehicle speed, steering angle, throttle angle and yaw rate. In Normal mode (when neither Sport nor Lock mode is activated), torque is transferred to the rear wheels only when slip is detected – as in the previous generation model – or when understeer is detected during cornering. This makes for better agility and driving performance, both on and off-road.

When Sport mode (standard on AWD models) is engaged, torque transfer to the rear wheels begins the moment the steering wheel is turned. The Dynamic Torque Control AWD System, taking feedback from the driver’s steering inputs, will automatically adjust to a 90:10 front:rear torque transfer to reduce the load on the front tyres. Should understeer develop, torque transfer to the rear wheels will be increased by up to 50 per cent, further reducing the loading on the front wheels and giving better lateral grip.

As well as activating the dynamic element in the system’s torque transfer, Sport mode modifies the steering, throttle and transmission: steering assistance is reduced, throttle response is sharpened and the CVT or automatic transmission management operates with higher revs to give a sportier driving experience.

The system has a 4WD Lock button for off-road driving, allowing the driver to lock torque distribution in a 50:50 ratio at speeds up to 25mph (40km/h).

The new RAV4 makes advances beyond the achievements of its predecessors to provide high standards of occupant safety and pedestrian impact protection. It features a new, high-rigidity, multi-path impact load body and has been engineered to meet the criteria for a five-star rating in the 2013 Euro NCAP crash test programme.

Inside there are new anti-whiplash seats and seven airbags, fitted as standard, including a driver’s knee airbag and twin-chamber front seat side airbags. Two new technologies for safety and driver assistance are featured on RAV4 for the first time: a Lane Departure Alert and a Blind Spot Monitor.

The Lane Departure Alert uses a lane recognition camera sensor mounted on the head of the windscreen to determine if the vehicle is unintentionally moving out of its lane. It will sound a warning buzzer and trigger a flashing line icon on the car’s multi-information display to warn the driver.

The blind spot warning system will alert the driver to another vehicle travelling in a blind spot alongside by lighting up the indicator on the door mirror on the appropriate side of the car. The system works using radar sensors fitted to each side of the rear of the vehicle. If the turn indicator is operating, the indicator will flash at fixed intervals to signal to the driver that another vehicle is in the blind spot.

The AWD capability provides greater safety and stability when negotiating low-grip surfaces, It also provides a towing capacity of 1,650kg, with Toyota’s Trailer Sway Control system providing added security and peace of mind.

Revised RAV4 range announced concurrently, featuring new exterior styling, improved cabin quality and further deployment of advanced technology and safety features.

The RAV4’s new front generates a stronger road presence and includes full LED headlights for the first time. What to watch out for

26-10-2013:

Promised (and ordered) spacesaver spares not always being supplied with the cars. Seems to be production problem.

Toyota hybrid warranty has changed. Now only 5 years / 100k miles as standard, but can be extended annually for the next 5 years by having a Hybrid Health Check (currently £39) - details here: https://www.toyota.co.uk/caring-for-your-toyota/warranty/toyota-warranty.json

26-07-2015:

Another complaint about Toyota satnav, this time in a RAV4. "D eplorably poor ability of the sat-nav nbuilt into a one year old RAV4 to navigate by the fastest routes or even to the proposed destinations while recently in France. It was so bad that we wished we have taken a Garmin as well."

05-08-2015:

All 'current' Toyota sat-navs use the same software. There is a manufacturer's advisory that if customers complain about nonsense directions in UK, France or Spain and their sat-nav has Software Version: 2.8.4al it requires upgrading free of charge, takes about one hour.

16-02-2016:

Report of DPF problems with 2014 Toyota RAV4 at 18k miles, bught used at 12k miles and driven 6k miles over the past year. In January 2016 suffered sudden drop in power, message on dash saying DPF faults and AWD fault. Taken to dealer who stated that the one board computer said that the vehicle had been driven for the past 500 miles with the warning message visible even though no warning meassage had showed. At first the dealer refused to carry out the repair under the 5 year warranty (which would have cost £1500 for a new DPF). Eventually agreed to a forced regeneration of the DPF, but the problem returned after a month and dealer now wants £1,282 for a nerw DPF.

25-04-2016:

Complaint about RAV4 2.2D-CAT Icon auto. Between 20k and 21k miles the car cut out four times: at 20000 miles when travelling at 75mph on M4 (stopped re-started); 4 months later at 10mph stopped and re-started; 1 month later at at 10mph stopped and re-started; 1 week later at 10mph stopped and re-started. Car then with dealer for 19 days and diagnostics show no problem.

17-06-2017:

Intermittent power loss reported from Toyota RAV4 2.0i Valvematic Multidrive S 4WD when trying to pull out of a parking space. Might be caused by a disparity between the tyres confusing the AWD system.

28-02-2019:

Report of 2016 Toyota RAV-4 2.0i Valvematic Multidrive S suffering a flat spot g oing uphill, especially if driver had to slow down. Hits a flat spot, then takes a second or two to pick up speed again. Akso occurs on roundabouts. Owner discovered it was because he has pressed the 'Eco' button. This delays the transmission changing down. He switched 'Eco' off and now the car is fine.

24-05-2019:

Report of 2016 Toyota RAV-4 failing to start because not driven far enough regularly enough to re-charge the 12v combustion engine and auxiliary battery.

23-09-2019:

Report of 2014 Toyota RAV-4 2.2 diesel using 1 litre of oil every 6 months. Probably failing valve stem oil seals.

15-07-2022:

Report of gearbox failure on 2016 RAV4. The car has covered 45,413 miles, before losing power and breaking down. The dealer that sold the car cannot identify the cause of the failure, but has reported "the transmission fluid is burnt". The quote for a new CVT gearbox is £8700.
