Nissan Juke (2010 – 2019) Review
Nissan Juke (2010 – 2019) At A Glance
The Nissan Juke - you can’t miss it. The bold styling is matched by big sales, which means the Juke is a common sight on the roads of Britain. Its success mirrors that of the larger Nissan Qashqai, although the Juke comes with crazy styling and some interesting design features on the inside. Launched in 2010, the Juke was a pioneer in the competitive compact crossover segment, with rivals offered by just about every mainstream manufacturer since.
If you were asked to name five famous dukes, we’d forgive you for mentioning the Nissan Juke. It’s up there with Daisy Duke, the Iron Duke, Duke Nukem and the Duke of Edinburgh. Probably.
To paraphrase Ms. Spears, the Juke was very much a case of ‘oops, Nissan did it again’, with the compact crossover adopting a similar approach to the Qashqai, albeit on a smaller scale. The recipe is fundamentally the same: take a small car platform, raise the right height, give it funky styling and improve the practicality.
We’ll come back to the issue of practicality in a moment, but it’s fair to say that Nissan didn’t hold back on the styling. Even now, a decade on from its launch in 2010, the Juke looks bold, striking, crazy and weird. You might not like it, but you can’t accuse Nissan of dialing it in.
It’s pretty bold on the inside, especially in models equipped with some of the many personalisation options. A centre console inspired by a motorcycle fuel tank is one thing. Colouring it red or yellow is another. Amazingly, you could get door mirror caps, fog light surrounds and alloy wheel accents to match.
So far, so bold, but what about the practicality? Not great, to be honest. The boot space on the early cars was comically poor, but things improved as part of the 2014 facelift. That said, it’s still no better than average, while sloping roofline and the shape of the rear windows combine to make it feel claustrophobic in the back.
It just goes to prove how far the compact crossover has come in a decade. The likes of the Seat Arona, Skoda Kamiq and Honda HR-V demonstrate that small doesn’t have to mean impractical. In most respects, the Nissan Juke is outdone by its modern rivals. The all-new Juke represents a major step forward.
Which could render the rest of this review pointless. Time to stream some old episodes of The A-Team – don’t pretend you’re not thinking about Daisy…
Not so fast, because the Nissan Juke has some things going for it. It’s cheap, with prices starting from around £3000.
It’s also fun to drive, in a strange kind of way. The ride is a little uncomfortable and the steering is numb – uncomfortably numb, then? – but it’s quite enjoyable to chuck around in the city. Avoid the lacklustre 1.6-litre engine, as the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivers the best blend of performance and economy.
Alternatively, the 1.5 dCi diesel engine is excellent if you intend to take your Juke on long motorway trips. We wouldn’t recommend it, because the Juke feels noisy and unrefined at high speeds. Stay within the city limits, Tina.
It’s not perfect, but what is? It’s one of the cheapest used compact crossovers on the market, and you’re unlikely to lose it in a crowded car park, especially if you get one in Sun Light Yellow or Ink Blue. Read on to find out more. We love it when a plan comes together.

Reviews for Nissan Juke (2010 – 2019)'s top 3 rivals
Nissan Juke (2010 – 2019) handling and engines
- Engines range from 1.2 DIG-T to 1.6 DIG-T Nismo RS Automatic 4WD
- Readers report Real MPG to be between 22–65 mpg
Nissan Juke (2010 – 2019): Handling and ride quality
Take the steering, which is too light and lacks any meaningful feedback. It means that it’s easy to drive on urban roads, but it lacks any form of engagement. It’s also more uncomfortable than you’d expect, with potholes and imperfections in the road sent crashing through the cabin. The problem is worse on larger alloy wheels, but all versions suffer from noisy suspension.
There’s very little in the way of body-roll, and the Juke feels neat and tidy when cornering. Put aside any thoughts of the Juke Nismo RS offering any form of hot hatchback thrills. It doesn’t deliver, but it can be fun in small doses.
Nissan Juke (2010 – 2019): Engines
Early examples offered the choice of two engines: a lacklustre 1.6-petrol or the more impressive 1.5 dCi diesel. The 94PS version of the 1.6 petrol is woefully slow and unrefined, while the 117PS version was only marginally better. If you’re buying a pre-facelift Juke, you ought to choose the punchy and frugal 1.5 dCi diesel.
A 1.2 DIG-T 115 was introduced as part of the 2014 facelift. Thanks to the combination of 115PS and decent fuel economy, this is the best engine if you intend to spend most of your time in the city. It’s also more refined than the earlier 1.6-litre unit.
Some versions, including the Nismo RS, use a 200PS 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine. It gives the Juke genuine pace, along with the same kind of torque vectoring you’ll find in a Nissan GT-R. Instant kudos.
Nissan Juke (2010 – 2019): Safety
The Juke was awarded a five-star safety rating when it was crash-tested by Euro NCAP in 2011. It scored well, but pedestrian safety wasn’t a strong point. You can blame that ‘challenging’ front end for a score of 41 percent.
It comes with six airbags, electronic stability control, a passenger airbag cut-off switch, Isofix points in the rear and three adjustable rear head restraints as standard. An optional Safety Shield pack was available on some models. This comprised lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, moving object detection and around-view monitor.
Nissan Juke (2010 – 2019): Towing
The petrol versions of the Nissan Juke offer a maximum towing capacity of 1250kg.

Nissan Juke (2010 – 2019): Practicality
Boot space is either terrible or adequate, depending on the age of the Nissan Juke. At launch, it offered 251 litres of luggage capacity, which is what you’d expect to find in a city car. The 2014 facelift improved matters, when some repackaging increased the boot space to 354 litres. Better, if hardly class-leading. Folding the rear seats increases the maximum capacity to 1,189 litres.
It’s not even particularly spacious in the cabin. Rear legroom is OK, but the sloping roofline and shape of the rear windows combine to make it feel quite claustrophobic in the back. It’s fine for children, but adults won’t be comfortable on a long journey. There are two Isofix points in the back.
In the front is where you’ll find the best seats in the house. The raised driving position is great for city driving, although the Juke loses marks for the lack of reach adjustment for the steering wheel.
Nissan Juke (2010 – 2019): Quality and finish
The pod-like instrument panels, cockpit-style design for the infotainment and air-conditioning panel, and centre console inspired by a motorcycle fuel tank between the front seats are a break from the norm.
It’s just a shame that the plastics feel cheap, with plenty of scratchy and hollow sections on display. The actual quality is okay, but the Juke flatters to deceive. The 2014 facelift added the option of a glass roof – the extra light helps to make the cabin feel a tad more special.
Nissan Juke (2010 – 2019): Infotainment
A decade is a long time in the world of infotainment, so many versions of the Juke are lacking in this department. You need to buy one of the higher trim levels to get the NissanConnect 5.8-inch touchscreen navigation and entertainment system. The small screen and dated graphics mean it’s looking very dated in 2020.
The basic versions get an AM/FM/CD audio system with four speakers and an AUX socket. You have to progress beyond the entry-level Juke to get Bluetooth and a USB port. In short: avoid the Visia trim.
Nissan Juke (2010 – 2019) value for money
Nissan Juke (2010 – 2019): Prices
Prices start from £3000. For this budget, you’re looking at a 2010 car with up to 150,000 miles on the clock. Increasing the budget to £4000 will give you more choice and a noticeable uplift in quality. Look out for tired ex-rental cars which will be showing their age, inside and out.
Post-facelift models start from around £5000. A revised front grille and new rear lights are the biggest hints that you’re looking at a facelifted Juke.
The very latest examples of the Mk1 Nissan Juke cost £16,000, but this is enough to secure an all-new model. Unless it’s a great deal on the old car, we’d recommend the new Juke.
Examples of the Nissan Juke Nismo RS cost between £10,000 and £15,000. You’ll pay between £8,000 and £15,000 for a Juke Bose Personal Edition. Around 75 percent of all used Jukes are powered by a petrol engine.
The Juke benefitted from the PCP boom, with Nissan offering some very competitive deals. This continues on the used market, with hire purchase deals start from around £60 a month. This is based on a four-year contract and a £1000 deposit.
A late example could cost as much as £350 a month on an HP contract, so it’s worth looking at the PCP deals on a new Juke. Not only could this work out cheaper, you’ll also benefit from Nissan’s new car warranty.
Nissan Juke (2010 – 2019): Running Costs
Fuel economy should be reasonable in the Nissan Juke, even if you’re unlikely to achieve the official figures. Nissan made some wild claims about the efficiency of the 1.5 dCi 110, quoting as much as 70.6mpg for a Juke riding on 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels.
Real MPG shows a figure of 51.7mpg is more likely, which remains an impressive result. You can expect a drop in economy if you opt for the 18-inch wheels.
The news is less positive if you opt for a petrol engine. For all its faults, the old 1.6-litre engine could return 39.7mpg, which is close to the official figure. There’s a 5mpg penalty for choosing the automatic transmission. Opting for the automatic version of the 1.6 DIG-T will increase your fuel bill, especially in four-wheel-drive versions. You’re looking at 25.7mpg to 34.4mpg, according to Real MPG data.
Insurance shouldn’t be a problem, but the Juke isn’t as cheap to insure as you might think. Even the lowly 1.6-litre Visia gets a group eight rating, while some 1.6 DIG-T models slot into group 21. Juke Nismo RS models range from 20 to 26.

The success of the Nissan Juke was built on its bold styling, cheap prices and low-rate finance. As the UK’s most popular compact crossover when new, there are loads to choose from when buying used. Just be aware that although the Juke pioneered the compact crossover segment, it’s no longer the class-leader.
Avoid the Visia trim, which is woefully inadequate. We’d also steer clear of the 1.6-litre petrol engine. As much we like the 1.5 dCi diesel, we’d recommend the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol, which offers the best blend of performance, efficiency and relevance in 2020.
Visia is the entry-level trim and comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, ESP, six airbags, sports seats, manual air conditioning, a single CD stereo with an aux-in socket, remote central locking, front and rear electric windows, rear Isofix child seat mounting points and 60/40 split rear seats.
Acenta models get a multifunction steering wheel, Bluetooth, a USB port, cruise control, front fog lights, the Dynamic Control System, 17-inch 'Elegance' alloy wheels, body coloured door handles and mirrors, automatic air conditioning, chrome interior door handles plus a leather steering wheel and gear lever.
Tekna is the top trim level and adds the Nissan Connect system, a colour reversing camera, rain sensitive wipers, automatic lights, Intelligent Key with engine start button, electric folding mirrors, tinted privacy glass, 17-inch 'Sport' alloy wheels and grey or red leather upholstery.

Nissan Juke revealed
The Nissan Juke created a new category of small crossover, below the the Qashqai. The car was inspired by the Qazana concept car at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, and will fit into the Nissan range between the Note compact family car and the Qashqai.
The Juke is based on Renault Nissan Alliance B-Platform and has a 2,530mm wheelbase, is 4,135mm long, 1,765mm wide and 1,570mm tall. To allow the top of the range to use 17-inch wheels and 215/55 R17 tyres, the track front and rear is 1,525mm, the widest yet seen on the Alliance B-platform.
In Europe, there will be three engine and manual or CVT transmission choices. At the top of the range is a newly developed 1.6-litre Direct Injection Gasoline turbocharged engine which develops 140kW (190PS) and 240Nm.
The second petrol engine, which also displaces 1.6-litres and has four valves per cylinder, is an extensively reworked HR. Designated HR16DE it has a larger exhaust manifold, a retuned intake manifold, twin VTC, improved intake tumble flow and new catalyst with a hexagon cell formation. New pistons with revised crowns and integral oil jet cooling have been adopted along with low friction techniques such as diamond-like carbon coating on the valve lifters.
The final engine choice is the familiar Alliance developed K9K 1.5-litre 1,461cc eight-valve dCi turbocharged common rail diesel. With power rated at 81kW (110PS) at 4,000 rpm and torque at 240 Nm at 1,750 rpm, this unit features a fuel return rail and control unit for improved fuel efficiency..
The XTRONIC CVT with 6-speed manual mode in the turbocharged petrol-engined Juke has been tuned for a more sporting performance with revised manual modes for sharper acceleration while the management system has been reprogrammed to enhance fuel efficiency. Both CVTs have adaptive shift control systems that can be selected via the Nissan Dynamic Control System.
Range availability is as follows:
- 1.5 dCi 81kW Diesel 2wd 6-speed manual
- 1.6i 86kW Petrol 2wd 5-speed manual
- 1.6i 86kW Petrol 2wd XTRONIC CVT
- 1.6i Turbo 140kW Petrol 2wd 6-speed manual
- 1.6i Turbo 140kW Petrol 4wd XTRONIC CVT M6
The model line-up follows Nissan's established Visia, Acenta and Tekna lines. Lists of standard and optional equipment will be released nearer the on sale date, but expected items such as climate control, leather upholstery, rear view camera and Intelligent Key will all be available to Juke customers along with some more unusual features.

Juke R unveiled
Just two versions of the Nissan Juke-R are being created, one in each of left-hand and right-hand drive. The cars have been developed by Nissan and are being built by leading motorsports outfit RML with input from Nissan Technology Centre for Europe (NTC-E). Testing of the car will begin in November.
At the heart of Nissan Juke-R will be the GT-R's V6 turbo-charged engine that produces an incredible 480bhp. Fitting this into the space usually taken by Juke's 1.6-litre engine is a big challenge for the team. Not only do they have to build the car around the engine but also find space to house all the cooling systems that it needs to perform.
February 2012
Juke Shiro introduced
Externally, Shiro can be identified by its stylish dark grey 17-inch alloy wheels, the satin silver finish to the door handles and mirror caps plus a gloss black finish to the B-pillar. Although available in any of the colours offered on Juke models, Shiro does have one additional unique hue in its palette: Nightshade, a sophisticated deep aubergine colour.
Shiro builds on the top-of-the-range Tekna grade with prices starting from £17,695. It is available with all three engine choices – a 110PS 1.5-litre dCi; 117PS normally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol; and the range-topping turbocharged direct injection petrol 1.6-litre DIG-T with 190PS. A 4x4 version and CVT automatics are also available.
August 2012

All models come equipped with standard 17-inch white alloy wheels, white door handles and white mirror caps. To further enhance the bold look, the B-pillar is finished in high-gloss black, while a unique Ministry of Sound badge completes the external design package.

Available on all manual transmission Jukes except those in Visia trim, the Stop/Start system costs just £200 extra and reduces CO2 emissions from 139g/km to 136g/km, while fuel consumption in the urban environment – one of the Juke’s natural hunting grounds – is improved by seven per cent, from 36.7mpg to 39.2mpg. Combined economy also jumps from 47.1mpg to 48.7mpg too.

Revised Juke revealed
There are new alloy wheels, a new audio system; latest generation NissanConnect driver-vehicle interface, Nissan Safety Shield, Nissan Dynamic Control system, plus the option of a new opening glass roof. On sale throughout Europe from Summer 2014.
Three engines are available for the 2014 Juke, with changes to the two petrol options. The existing and acclaimed 1.5 dCi diesel with 110PS continues unchanged.
The Alliance-developed 1.2-litre DIG-T petrol engine, which replaces the outgoing 117PS 1.6-litre unit, is an advanced turbocharged direct injection engine generating 190Nm of torque.
The existing 1.6 DIG-T petrol unit has been further improved to deliver lower end torque below 2,000rpm. Producing 140kW, it is already Euro6 compliant with target emissions of 139g/km of CO2for the 2WD versions. Among its new features are a higher combustion ratio, improved low friction technologies and cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation.
As well as a six-speed manual transmission, new Juke 1.6 DIG-T 4WD is optionally available with a new Xtronic transmission gearbox which further improves fuel efficiency, acceleration and all-round performance. The Xtronic replaced the previous CVT transmission that was highly prone to failure.
