Mazda 2 Sport - Buying a new car with 0% finance but no discount - kitefield

A Mazda dealer is offering a choice of two 0% finance deals over two or three-and-a-half years with either £1,000 or 50% up front on a new Mazda 2 Sport but is refusing to budge over the £13,000 list price. Is this a good deal, or should I push for some discount? I have always haggled successfully when buying a new car. He has also only offered £5,300 on my 09 Yaris with only 7600 miles - HJ's website suggests it's worth at least £5,400. Is the finance option worth pursuing at the cost of no discount? I offered to pay cash with the part-ex if I could have a discount on the new car but the dealer said that he could not take up that offer, quoting something about it being 'illegal'.

Sounds like nonsense. The dealer is probably incentivising staff for every finance deal they do.

You should be able to get discount and 0% finance. If not, walk away. As for it being illegal to pay cash plus a part exchange, that's what most people do anyway if I'm understanding you correctly.

Try another Mazda dealer, better still have a look on new car deals websites such as UKNewcars or Drivethedeal. These sites put you in touch with a dealer who is prepared to offer a discount, any deposit goes to the supplying dealer and you conclude your business with or without your part exchange with that dealer.

Is the garage part of the "Payday Loans"empire, do as adviced above walk away and find a dealer who really wants to sell his wares.

With just a little searching, I've found the Mazda 2 Sport at £11702, brand new.

Its not how much a car costs but how much you as a customer have to pay, the bit in the middle or the difference in between what your car is worth and the amount they want for the new car plus finance charges if they are relevent.

Very true Collos.

Looking at private sales of 2009 Yaris with low mileage suggests an asking price of between £5500 and £6000. Another option for you to consider.

If any 0% finance deal is offered, by law it is illegal to offer a cheaper price if payment is made in full at the time of purchase.

With any loan based purchase, the dealer receives the full purchase price from the finance company on day one and the purchaser pays off the loan. With a 0% interest charge and 0% APR then the difference in price should be nil between paying by cash on day one or paying the loan; hence it being illegal to offer a discount for cash, as otherwise the 0% deal isn't 0%.

Thanks for the advice - and especially to Happy Blue! who explained the 'illegality' far better than the salesman!! I have now found an alternative dealer and have ordered the Mazda. I managed to get £600 off the asking price (plus a few extras) , all on a straightforward 0% finance deal - plus £6000 for the Yaris in Part-Ex, so I am a happy bunny.

Have you consider a new Yaris? I don't think is much far off the price for Mazda 2, the depreciation works out a lot better too?

I did, but I'm just not so keen on the shape of the new Yaris - I guess it's all down to personal taste.
