And also i can take it out of any gear without putting the clutch in so i can be in 3rd for example and i would be able to push it into neutral fairly easily without putting the clutch in but i have to put clutch in for me to be able to put it into gear but gearchange is easy and genrally smooth.

Being a nice direct gearchange I fear it is wear in the gearbox causing your problem, can be adjustment of the external linkage in FWD cars, but you don't have any.

I would also like to say the car has only got 105,000 miles on the clock and i dont expect a bmw to have any gearbox problems this early or clutch or flywheel i might expect it of a vauxhall but not bmw and it is a manual by the way, which i did not mention either.

Thanks

I wouldn't have done either, the gearboxes on my XMs are generally good for 300k but I have one with noisy bearings at about 180k. Have you owned t from new? if not it could it could have had a hard life in the hands of the previous owner/s or been run short of oil.

Hi now i have only had it 7 months but there has only been 2 previous owners and it has got full bmw service history and is in excellent condition so it dosen't seem to have been abused, it works fine goes in and out of gears fine biting point on clutch is were it should be there is no slipping on clutch just now and again pops out of 4th gear and in any gear can be put into neutral without putting clutch in.

Thanks

Even the best cars occaisionally have a rogue part. It could be a selector shaft spring, on older gearboxes they could be accessed from outside, might be a good idea to take it to a gearbox specialist, at least he would give you an estimate of cost.

Hi thanks for the replys but iam not spending any money sorting it out as it only does it every few times it goes in and out of gear as normal, runs as normal so i will just put up with it, it will probably never break so will leave it for time being as brakes and wheel bearing need doing and rear subframe bushes which are dear enough, but thanks for replys.

Thanks
