Cheapest new car with scrappage allowance - moonshine {P}
Hi all, I'm looking to get rid of a 1999 Audi A4. However, as it looks like I'll be lucky to get anything over £1500 I'm toying with the idea of getting a new car - something small and cheap to run. Does anyone know what the cheapest new car options are with the scrappage allowence?

'Reader reports an average 38mpg in town from a 1.3 manual.'

Yet a Merc 320 auto cdi I owned regularly provided 50mpg.( even though it fell apart around me ).

This to me makes a nonsense of the VED rates on the various cars.

The Perodua actually looks like quite a good little car - sounds like its mostly based on Daihatsu and toyota designs. The only problem is the badge, personally Im not bothered but it would effect resale badly.

Slight change of plan, now looking at the hyundai i10 1.2 comfort £5,485 with the scrappage allowence. Also going to sell the A4 privately and sadly the 1984 Celica Supra will meet its end instead :(

Why a new, cheap, small car?

You can buy, for instance, a two or three-year-old Ford Focus for the price you mention...:-)

I know what I would rather have.....

Too late, the i10 is ordered. Your are right in that a 2-3 year old focus is great value and a good car, but...

5year warrenty
no mot for 3 years
£35 VED
good deal with the scrapage allowence
very cheap to run

My mate was trying to choose a scrappage special and it was a choice between the Picanto and the Panda. He found the Panda was far nicer to drive and also better built.

So do I :)

I took one for a test drive, it was quiter than expected and felt more spacious than expected. Handling was a bit soft, but then you dont buy that sort of car to go round a track. All controls were very light so should be good in traffic. Hopefully some cheap and hassle free motoring ahead.
