Typical! We're about to go abroad with SWMBO's 306 HD1 X reg. A knocking noise has developed coming fom the "belts" side of the engine, quite loud when started from cold. The local Peugeot garage listened to it (warmed up, of course) and said they couldn't hear anything wrong. They've kept the car and will have another listen when it's cold.

My thoughts are that the problem could be the damped crankshaft pulley that drives the auxiliary belt. I gather that on this vintage they are the spring-damped, not the rubber-damped type. The car has done 50 000 miles or so and as far as we know, has not had the cambelt changed.

My fear is that the garage will be uncertain and we'll be faced with the choice of either taking the car and worrying about it, or taking the "other" car, with all the hassle of changing the ferry booking/breakdown cover etc etc.

Any diagnosis, guys, please? Should we take this car on a jaunt across Europe?

Sounds very like a failing vibration damper. Hopefully they'll get the message when it's cold and under more load from the alternator.

Should you take it to Europe? No!

Just a thought, but if it will get there it might be cheaper (and will certainly be at least as good from the work point of view) to get it done in France. Of course if it's going to take several days then perhaps it's a bad idea.

Many thanks for the comments so far.

Would suggesting the garage switches on all the electrics and a/c when they re-start the car help to highlight the problem, if the pulley/damper needs to be loaded to make it rattle?

Definitely worth a try; sometimes the failing DM pulley sheds a tell-tale thin strip of metal - keep an eye out for it.

The garage say they can't find anything wrong! Let's hope when the car is really cold tomorrow morning and they start it, the noise will be obvious.

Just had this done a few days ago on my HDi Xantia - a rattle from cold from engine bay behind offside wheel, getting progressively worse over the course of a few weeks. Closer inspection revealed that a circular ribbon of thin metal or plastic was starting to work its way out from the centre of the pulley.

Pulley itself cost about 95 quid plus VAT, not sure of the labour as I had a few others bits and bobs done at an independent Cit specialist.

Right - here's the outcome: the garage decided not to wait until this morning and replaced the pulley. Lovely quiet engine. Apparently there was no obvious sign of any damage to the pulley they took off. If I remember correctly, there are two or three springs inside - perhaps only one had failed.

I didn't say, but the car was just inside its 6-month guarantee (10 days to run). Very decent of the garage to do it with no demur. Full marks to Hindmarch of Stamford!

Forgot to thank everyone who contributed and thereby helped us to deal with the garage.
