Audi A3 temperature warning

Audi A3 temperature warning - MrWibble
Got a temperature gauge flashing up on SWMBO's 2002 A3 1.8T driver info display when started from cold the last few days. No problem with warm starts and re-starting after message appears. No other problems / obvious issues - checked cooling system - no problems obvious then or during long / short drives.

Before I spend money on a diagnosis do any BRs come across this before ? Looking to replace this car soon with a Mondeo as MrWibble Jr is soon to be delivered by Stork Express.

Could be a faulty sender? I'd try checking cabling to this, and maybe change the unit if cabling is OK. But it could be lots of things... Sorry!
