Peugeot Motorhome 2.5TD - Frogeye
A friend has a 1993 model, fitted with the 2.5 litre turbo diesel engine. It has covered around 60k miles. He was driving it and there was a loud metallic knocking noise and the oil light came on. He immediately switched off and had the vehicle recovered. Plenty of oil in sump. The engine is now out and at a local engine shop, who have stripped it and cannot find any damage to bearings, crank etc. They say that oil pump is OK but drop valve, which I assume is the relief valve is marked. None of this makes sense to me as the valve limits the max pressure but if it was stuck open would it mean no pressure at all??

Any ideas, please.

It's a pressure relief valve, so yes if it stuck open it would dump the oil back to the sump and you would have no oil pressure. Sounds like he was very 'lucky' not to completely trash the bottom end of the engine!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Thanks, let us hope that we have found the problem. It is worrying to have had the engine stripped and not find the cause. Could the loud metallic banging he heard have been the bearings? The garage that the engine is in can't see any bearing/crank damage. They have quoted about £1k to polish the crank, new shells and head gasket and assemble the engine. Putting it back in vehicle is not included. Seems steep to me?

AFAIK the pressure relief valve is integral to the oil pump, or at least the housing is. If it was my van I would sleep much happier at night if I had a new pump fitted, little additional cost on the 1K.

As far as the cost goes, I fear the pricing on motorhomes is often related to their residual value, after all the same fault on a 1993 panel van would result in a quick visit to the scrapyard, either for a replcement engine or to say bye-bye!

You are right, he cannot afford all this cost and hassle again. A new pump has been bought for over £200 from Peugeot!! No skimping, just in case.

Update. Engine has gone to another specialist who says that the crank has broken!! Not unheard of they say!
