Renault Megane stop/start problems - cause?

I regularly follow your Q&A page and was wondering if you could help me. I have a 2013 Renault Megane 1.5 DCI Coupe with Stop/Start and recently the system has failed to operate and I get the error "Check Stop & Start system". What is causing the problem?

I travel around 40 miles on most days and have covered 17,000 miles this year alone. As far as I know, I'm covering the distance for a diesel. What is causing this fault?

Might be a weak battery, but usually the system is programmed so that if the battery is a bit weak the engine doesn't switch off. May, as they suggested, be a software glitch. 17k a year should be enough to keep the battery sufficiently charged, but if it has lost a bit of capacity, that might explain it.
