Buying a used hatchback...i need help! - overcast
I'm looking for a used car for myself, a hatchback, preferably a diesel at the £5500 price limit and a car with the same body shape as a VW Golf mk4, like a Honda Civic or an Audi A3 or indeed a Golf etc, basically a hatchback on the larger side. I need a car that will (hopefully) last a long while.

Can anybody recommend me a best cars in this price range and size? I have very little knowledge of cars and would greatly appreciate some help on the choice. also if you know anywhere online or anyone to ring i would like that aswell

Thanks in advance for any replies

The only car with the same body shape as a VW Golf MkIV is a Golf MkIV..:-)

If you go to:

The Autotrader website, via the link to the left of here, or similar magazine/used car sales website, you can key in what you require and bring up a list of used Golf MkIV Tdi variants from all over the country or even just within a few miles of your home.

You are talking about hatchbacks in what is generally termed the Escort class.

Another possibility, especially at the price you mention, would be a Ford Focus but it won\'t extend to the latest TDCI engines, only the Tdi.

DONT CLICK ON STUARTLI\'S LINK! {Quite. Which is why I have edited the text. DD}

Scroll down on the left hand side & enter your information in the Autotrader box. HJ then gets sixpence (or less...) from Autotrader.

I've been to autotrader loads and other places but basically need advice as to which of these style of cars are the best, the focus? peugeot 307? honda civic? honda civic? etc etc... I've had a lot of mixed advice about all these cars and want to get more to help me make my decision.

But that's not what you originally posted..:-)

The only way to find out is to try them out "for size", whether there's the room you require, the specification features on offer, insurance and running costs, depreciation etc and, finally, to drive them.

The worst thing you can do is to listen to someone who says "The Golf/Civic/Peugeot etc is the best thing since sliced bread," go out and buy one and then feel shortchanged or wonder whether you could have done better.

My own choice would be the Golf, but the Civic is also a very good car, the Focus excellent for overall ride and handling etc.

Actual style is purely a matter of personal taste and most in a particular class will pretty much resemeble the others.

The "What Car Road Test Directory" is on sale at your local newsagents and/or WH Smith's now - £7.50 or thereabouts. It lists and reviews every new car on sale in the UK (from a half-page to two pages each).

It will help cut down your test-driving short list.

Alternatively read Honest John's car-by-car breakdown - just as comprehensive, but not as glossy www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm
