Prelude Gear Change notchy - Mikey Jay

The gear change is cable operated on this model. The gears are difficult to change when engine is cold. The car has only done a certified 60k. Gear change is very notchy and audible,sometimes quite stiff,sometimes ok. I will check cable adjustments and check transmission oil. It should be 10/40 grade. With engine idling the gears can be selected ok. Might it help to change the transmission oil? The manual does stipulate periodic changes. A lot of mechanics say this is unnecessary. If anyone has experience of working on cable operated gear boxes I would welcome a reply. Many thanks. MJ
