I can find plenty of stats about British made cars, but can you advise the top 10 cars that have the highest percentage value which benefits the British economy.
For example. A Nissan Qashqai is designed and built in Sunderland, but has certain components made in Japan / France. A Saab may be manufactured in Sweden but the Company will have a salesforce in the UK which might make up say 10% of the total cost of the car. The car that will come top will be 100% designed, manufactured, tested, sold (taxed) and all parts manufactured in Britain. Does such a car exist? If not what is the highest percentage you can get.

>>Saab may be manufactured in Sweden

Only 2nd hand SAABs in UK - they went bust...new SAAB Co but nothing to do with UK as yet.

My CRV is UK built - Jap gearbox,Jap Dunlop tyres, Hungarian glass, Dutch floor mats, Swedish boot tray.....

Morgan? McLaren? Ginetta? Caterham?

Most of these use proprietary engines, CV joints, brake calipers etc, some of which will be UK designed/made, some may be made elsewhere.

Many F1 cars are designed and built here with unique in-house parts, some items (e.g. spark plugs) will be bought in from specialist manufacturers who may be foreign, it's not cost/time effective to design, develop and test such things if what you need is readily available. Tyres are another item for which tyre makers expertise may as well be taken advantage.

I doubt if there has been a 100% designed and 100% home manufactured British car for several decades.

The manager at one company had a go at me for buying a foreign car. I won't say what I thought of him. Isn't the Micra made in Sunderland?

No, it did years ago but it's made in India now.

I belive the Qashqai\Juke and Leaf are made in Sunderland.

I would expect there is not any car made at the moment that is all made in the UK or any other country. Even years ago I expect there would have been imported parts.

BMW make engines in the West Midlands at a huge engine factory.

I guess you could buy a BMW with a British made engine.

I think the only proper British-owned vehicle manufacturer left that designs all its own major compnents, is JCB !

The Sunderland Nissan factory produces more vehicles per year than Italy does.

It depends on what criteria you apply. I still say Jaguar and Land Rover are British car companies. Their HQ's are here and they build their cars here. That's good enough for me. The fact the Indians own it makes no difference.

Well it does make a difference. It means the stuff works.

How do you find out things like that?

About 40 years too late, we don't make things any more because anyone taking a pride in their job was subject to ridicule and patriotism went the same way and worse unless it involved paying young men obscene amounts of money to kick a bladder about.

People keep saying guff like that but aren't we still the 6th biggest manufacturer or something?

People in this country are so quick to turn their noses up to one northern car plant chucking out more cars than the entire Italian motor industry just because some Japanese suit owns it.

I think the real problem is where does the Tax get paid. Since Boots were taken over by a group based in Switzerland they now pay £94 million less tax into this country! That must also apply to Indian/Chinese/et al. Thats a lot of NHS/ Pension bills that cant be paid by the government. Being taken over by foreign companies is not good for us, only for fat cats!
