Ford Focus 1.6 running rough - why?

I have recently bought a Ford Focus MK2 1.6 Duratech and it is now running very rough, it struggles to start but once started it idles rough however does not cut out, when revved it is badly misfiring and driving it is not advised, it does drive but again badly misfiring and under powered.

I don't think it has had any recent work or New parts what I can see from the engine bay other than a recon alternator, was thinking of changing the coil pack, leads and spark plugs as it is a common fault but thought I'd see if it could be something else before I start wasting money and guessing, the car has 128,000 and seems to have been looked after reasonably well by the previous owner of 6 years, the management light is permanently flashing, any info would be greatly appreciated.

It may be prudent ( and more cost effective ) to carry out a diagnostic check in the first instance (given the warning light is on)

This then should show up a fault code/s ( ie P---- 4 numbers) which can then be related to the actual problem.

Would not go changing any parts at this stage unless you can identify the problem.

You may want to carry out a compression test as well to find out the internal state of the engine.
